_D_e_s_c_r_i_p_t_i_o_n:

This function is generic; method functions can be written to
handle specific classes of objects. Classes which already have
methods for this function include: `formula', `modelStruct',
     `pdBlocked', `pdMat', and `reStruct'.

_U_s_a_g_e:

     Names(object, ...)
     Names(object, ...) <- value

_A_r_g_u_m_e_n_t_s:

object: any object for which names can be extracted and/or assigned.

...: some methods for this generic function require additional
          arguments.

_V_a_l_u_e:

will depend on the method function used; see the appropriate
     documentation.

_S_I_D_E _E_F_F_E_C_T_S:

On the left side of an assignment, sets the names associated with
`object' to `value', which must have an appropriate length.

_N_o_t_e:

If `names' were generic, there would be no need for this generic
     function.

_A_u_t_h_o_r(_s):

     Jose Pinheiro and Douglas Bates

_S_e_e _A_l_s_o:

     `Names.formula', `Names.pdMat'
